The Marion Meisters defeated The Elderon Whiskeyjacks in the 2009 BABA Grand Championship

 

    The Marion Meisters captured the 64th Annual B.A.B.A. Grand Championship with a 10-5 win over Elderon Sunday at Marion.

    Elderon drew first blood scoring a run in the first inning on Matt Meronk's RBI single..

    Marion took a 2-1 lead in the second Mark Miller singled home their first run and a Dave Jueds' bases loaded walk force in the second run.  The Meisters upped their lead to 3-1 in the fourth when Mike James singled and scored on Tony Wilber's one-out RBI single.. The winners picked up another run in the fifth when Dave Corn reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Jason Krueger's double.

    Elderon made it 4-2 in the top of the sixth when Shawn Kerstner walked and scored on Marv Meronk's sacrifice fly.

    Marion put the game away for good in their half of the sixth scoring five times. The big blow of the inning was Jason Krueger's three-run homer to left. The winners plated their final run of the game in the ninth on Mark miller's RBI single.

    The WhiskeyJacks scored twice in the seventh when a bases loaded walk and a bases loaded hit batsman forced home two runs. Brandon Groshek drove in Elderon's final run with a fielder's choice after Ron Knitter had walked and Randy Printz doubled.

    Ryan Mortensen was the winning pitcher. He worked 6-1/3 innings, allowed seven hits, fanned eight, walked five and hit two batters while allowing three earned runs. Kavit Beyersdorf worked the final 2-2/3 frames allowing  three hits and a run.

    Rick Boda took the loss. Boda worked six innings, allowed nine runs on nine hits (2 earned), fanned seven and walked six. Marv Meronk pitched the final two innings for Elderon. He allowed a run on two hits, fanned two and walked three.

    Most Valuable Player Jason Krueger paced the Meisters going three for four with a double and homer and four RBI. Mark Miller had three hits with a double and two RBI and Tony Wilber had two hits with a double and two RBI. Mike James, Ryan Mortensen and Kavit Beyersdorf each contributed one hits for the winners.

    For Elderon, player/manager Robby Wyman led the way going 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Marv Meronk had two hits and an RBI. Randy Printz had a double and Brandon Groshek and Matt Meronk each added a hit for the WhiskeyJacks.

    The winners had 11 hits in the contest compared to 10 for Elderon. Marion left 11 on base while Elderon stranded 14 base runners.

    Marion committed one error in the game while the WhiskeyJacks committed four fielding miscues.

    Following the game, awards were presented by B.A.B.A. Commissioner Craig Brei.
